"Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them." – Albert Einstein

Harry says hello!Sorry to all my childless and fancy-free friends.  You must endure another o-my-god-my-son-is-so-perfectly-wonderfully-adorable-isn’t-he posts.  Okay.  Well.  I am not sorry.  I am going with that “no apologies” policy outlined yesterday. Live with it.

Harry is just a little too young to really go trick-or-treating.  It’s a long way for his little legs to handle, confounded with the fact that we live in the foothills.  Uphill is not a problem for those little toddler jambs.  Downhill, unfortunately, results in a barely-controlled dead-ass run ending in head-over-heels hurtling and many tears.  And that’s if only Mommy starts crying.  No.  I am just not ready for it.  Plus, we are on a no-nuts policy until Harry is two, so half the stuff he got he wouldn’t eat anyway.  I would.  Best to remove temptation entirely.

But if you are past the trick-or-treating age limit (and contrary to some of the oversized folks that hit our door last night, there IS an age limit), a lot of the fun is dressing up your kid in all the costumes you wished you had when you were little.  If you can’t live vicariously through your child, it isn’t worth the poop and vomit.  So we went on the “it is better to give than receive” philosophy, and let Harry take charge of handing out the treats to the advancing hordes.

I don’t think he could have had more fun.

He greeted everyone with a smile:

 Harry says Hi!

He handed out candy with trained precision:

Have a Kit-Kat!

At least, when he wasn’t so distracted by the costumes that his training broke down.  Apparently we need more work on Ninja-focus:

Oops!

And he waved a cheerful Bye-bye to everyone:

Happy Halloween!

And when the crowd thinned out he practiced his Ninja moves:

Haaaa YAH!

And put on his best Ninja-face:

Harry's Ninja-scowl

Or just plain waited:

Is anyone out there?

At one point he grabbed me by the arm and hauled me to the door.  “Make them appear, Mommy!  I want more silly people!”

Make them come BACK!

Finally, with resignation, at 8:30 we had to shut the door and turn off the lights:

Bye, Bye.

His disappointment was only mitigated by discovering the joys of leftover white chocolate Kit-Kat bars and yet another Elmo video.  He fell asleep still in the Ninja costume.  I think it was an unqualified success.

I think that might be the cutest ninja I have ever seen. I only wish I could have been there to see him in person. Thanks for the pictures!!
I did have fun with Scott dressed as a very handsome superman although he was not interested in handing out the candy as much as he was taking it out of the bucket, putting it on the table then raking it back into the bucket…of course I spent most of that time trying to find the candy that went into the grass instead of the bucket….fun times 🙂

He looks so incredibly adorable! My favorite is the cheeful bye-bye. Grammypie was a sheriff, just like Papa. But only got through about four candy stops. Then he realized he had a bucket of candy that “he was in charge of”. All attempts at focus from that point on were gone. : )

You know — it’ll likely change starting next year — since daylight savings time won’t end until the first weekend in November. I wonder if kids will still wait until dark to go out.

OMG Harry is so damn cute! When Tristan was that age, or maybe a smidge bigger, we took him trick or treating for the first time and every house we came to the person would hold out their candy bag and Tristan would put candy from his bag into it. He just couldn’t wrap his mind around them giving him something and not getting something back. This year, which is sadly possibly his last year, he polietly said thank you and took no more than three peices of candy from the unmanned buckets. I was teary eyed with pride all night! Our kids rule!!!!
