At the end of summer, 2006, a group of blogger-friends who regularly entertain each other with their own daily musings decided to set out and broaden their literary horizons. We are a bunch of avid readers, with a curiosity about each other’s opinions of what constitutes “a good read”, and the desperate desire to find things to blog about on slow days.
We assembled a book list, which, if followed, will spin us into 2009. Here is the list, to which I will be adding a general consensus comment as we finish them:
The Devil in the White City - General consensus: Starts disjointed and slow, picks up later, but never shines. Reviews by Robbin
Greek Fire, Poison Arrows and Scorpion Bombs - A bit slow and repetitive, but oh, so many ways to torture your enemies.
Star: A novel by Pamela Anderson - Complete fluff. Horrifyingly edited. We loved it.
A Mind of Its Own: A Cultural History of the Penis - Surprisingly good. A “thumbs up”.
In a Sunburned Country - Love Bill. Mixed opinions about Australia. With one exception, a definite “will recommend”.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time - Only two of us managed to get to this one due to a collective attack of life. Quirky little book and a quick read, but definitely worthwhile.
Illuminator - Only one person (being me), made it through this one. Review is here.
