Fascinating!
I have for so long been trying to tell people that Monozygotic does not mean a carbon copy. I have Mono twin girls. They suffered from Twin to Twin transfusion so their intrauterine enviornment was not only dangerous but different. One girl got too much blood and nutrient, the other was being starved. I am so grateful they both survived and are healthy, happy 3 year olds. One is always a bit fuller,( i.e.-chubbier) than the other, though many people say they don't see it. I read somewhere that most monozygotic twins are of differing weight, and even a little off in height and that this was due to the mitochondria? I believe this is what the article said but I may be getting things mixed up.
Is this what you were referring to? I would like to, with your permission link to this post. It is such an eye opener and somehow comforting to twin moms who may wonder why everything isn't exactly the same.

I'm not sure where I stumbled onto your blog -- or when, exactly. I don't read it as often as I'd like -- LJ is easier to keep up with -- but ...

What a wonderful explanation! Short, sweet and to the point. Can I steal it to use in lecture? :-) just kidding. That can be a very difficult concept to get across and you did it beautifully. I remember back when I started Grad School, there was a story that got a lot of press (and at that time I hadn't had genetics in *many* years) about a set of identical twins -- one of whom had Duchenne Muscular Distrophy!

Maybe I would have taken more science classes or at least paid attention in the ones that I did take had my professors paid this much careful attention to my questions. I found your explanation easy to read and absolutely fascinating. I've always wondered how my identical twins could seem so different from each other and, now, I know.

Thank you.

Genetics was always my favorite topic in my science classes. I thoroughly enjoyed reading your explaination. The interactive DNA link was just too much fun.

'k, already knew you were smart, now you move into the realm of scary-smart. Add that to Moose's lovable demeanor, instill them in Harry, and I fear the world will not be able to withstand him once he comes of age.

This post was just lovely - so articulate and clear and fascinating. I know you're a scientist, but do you also write about science for a living? Because if not, you should.
