"Problems cannot be solved at the same level of awareness that created them." – Albert Einstein

So…

About this book thing…

The Silence in the Inter-world was rather deafening last month on the book front:

I can interpret this in many ways, most of which will be weird (because Robbin-logic, while quite linear, is not necessarily linear in the direction of most of your normal-human-type brain circuits), or just plain wrong.

So let me throw out a few for your consideration.

1.  The Penis book was just not appealing this month.

2.  We need a break.

3.  We need the order shaken up a bit.

4.  We need to throw out the order and start with a clean slate because our interests have changed.

5.  We need to cut or losses, shake hands, and find a new gig.

I don’t have a personal investment in any of the above.  Personally, I am game to go forward, but I have a reading speed of, like, over 500 words a minute and I spend time in airports.

Your call, folks.  Let’s hear it from the collective.  Before I start introducing you to my friend, Bill (Bryson, that is).

I didn’t participate in this months book. I’ve been feeling kinda .. ?? not sure how to explain it but it, but have felt like the last couple of months no one has really participated so I decided to not participate this month. Why’s everyone participating on the dickie book? Hmmm..all us women seem to have our mind on one thing I guess. 🙂 I’ve read several other books in addition to the GAMBLE books too – “Son of a Witch” was pretty cool. But really, I feel strange writing book reviews. Everyone else’s reviews seem to get all technical. I just review whether or not I liked the book and why. Could care less about how it’s structured or researched or whatever. Bottom line is – am I entertained? I usually wind up feeling stupid after reading everyone else’s reviews in comparison to my own.
Uh…Did that at all answer your question? Sorry for the rambling.

Actually – I really agree with Char on that. I do feel kind of stupid when I read everyone else’s reviews because in the end – all I really want from a book is a chance to escape reality. That’s why I can’t do the non-fiction stuff. It’s not escape, it’s real and it drags me kicking and screaming into the real world where I don’t want to be when I read. Feh! I wish I had read Star, but I just didn’t get around to it. I think the whole concept of GAMBLE is great, but the books aren’t my cup of tea. Now – ask me about A Game of Thrones and I could go on forever! ;P

I’m still reading the penis book. It’s well, dry, a bit boreing so I read about five really good trashy romance novels. (now you know why I’m weepy) and the penis book was putting me to sleep so I used it for that.

Last night it kept me awake and I made some head way. I’m going to finish it, no penis, um, book will get the best of me.

I’m for Bill, he’s funny, I want to continue, but I suggest, one serious, one light, and go from there, we will hit some and miss some, but we are expanding our horizons. I for one, now feel so much closer to Pamela Anderson after learning how hard her life was. 😛

p.s. Don’t be intimidated because some of us with unused English degrees spout on about a book. We just have a burning need to analyze books and don’t get the chance to do it in our day to day life. Like a lot of the books we’ve read, our opinion is just that, our opinon and its worth what you paid for it. I’d really like to hear what everyone else thinks.

Don’t cancel the group. I like it. I do, however, have the attention span on a gnat lately. Let me be honest. I haven’t finished a book yet, skipped Star, and didn’t get around to buying the penis book (yet.) I vote for some more fiction, please. I have to agree with previous statements in that the book must entertain. After a long hard day at a retail chain during Christmas season the last thing I want to do is come home and read something serious.

PS: I have to say that the reviews I’ve read are intimidating to me, too.

Don’t cancel it! I’ll start writing reviews.. I promise. But I vote we change books or add books or soemthing. That being said…DO NOT CHANGE BEFORE BILL!!!! I love Bill Bryson!!!! Bill Bill Bill!!!!

No, I don’t want to stop the club.

But I would be in favor of choosing of new books, if that would make the masses happier. I can always do with some more fluff in my life.

My opinion is that even if we don’t change anything maybe we should call a hold until after the Holidays are over; I know the chances of me getting anything more than a supermarket paperback read over the next few weeks is pretty bleak. So maybe cancel December (and probably March as well cause I seriously doubt all of us are going to haul “Sea of Faith” to War) and bring Bill in for January?

I’m good, either way. I know that the format we’re using (blogs vs. a real-time book club) doesn’t always afford us the same perks- like being able to converse around a coffee pot about them- but I’m still having fun. I’m well into this book, so if we don’t have a hiatus, I’m good- but I’m also just as ok with doing as Sabine proposed, if it will mean that more people get to read along.

If we do want to re-shuffle or re-draw, I’m ok with that, too. I already bought thru February’s books, so I’d like to see them stay on.

    1. I’m enjoying the penis book… I have about a dozen pages left to go. I just haven’t had much time to work on it, with November sweeps and that stuff. Will post on that soon.

    2. I do need a break… at work. But that’s neither here nor there. I’m taking it next week. Books? I plan to eat a few, but I think I can choose a few on my own.

    3. Doesn’t matter to me… I’m along for the ride.

    4. I think there are some excellent books of merit on the list. I really want to read the diary of Margaret Hoby. Others? Well, who knows. And we can always opt out of a book if we want.

    5. No, no… I like this. It’s a bit of structure I could use.

    And… yeah, I’m a goob. I don’t know who Bill Bryson is.
